Lawn care for Boulder, Colorado
| Average lawn size | 2,819 sq ft (based on 300 local soil tests) |
| Dominant grass type | cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, and tall fescue |
| Typical soil pH | 7.4 (slightly alkaline) |
| Organic matter | 5.86% |
| Soil composition | 39% sand, 33% silt, 28% clay (clay loam) |
| Key nutrients | potassium 330 ppm, phosphorus 104 ppm, calcium 3,098 ppm |
Boulder lawns come with a few quirks. The soil runs alkaline with a clay loam texture, which means water doesn't always soak in the way you'd hope. Cool-season grasses do well here, but the semi-arid climate keeps things interesting.
Your soil holds nutrients but not always moisture
That clay loam base is actually pretty rich in organic matter and key nutrients. The challenge? Water tends to run off before roots get a good drink. Water deeply but less often, and avoid the classic mistake of frequent shallow sprinkles that just tease the surface. Our lawn guides can help you nail the timing.

Lawn Care in Boulder
We are very happy Sunday customers in our second year of Lawn Care Program. After a rough winter we decided to over-seed using your Fescue Mix. Bare patches gone, lawn is much healthier. Easy to use, our cat's much happier with your products. Of course, 12 inches of Spring rain didn't hurt either.

Colorado Lawn Transformation
Sunday was a game changing experience for my lawn. Even though lawn care is a seasonal tasks in Colorado it can still be a challenge with frequent changes in temperature and moisture on an annual basis. My yard was very patchy and overrun by weeds when we moved in back in 2017. I found Sunday in the Spring of 2019 after searching for fertilizer safe for my pets. The yard has transformed over the past two years and continues to improve with each application. I appreciate the excellent customer experience as well whenever I have a question or concern.

Boulder, Colorado FAQs
How to grow grass in Boulder, Colorado
| Recommended grass species | Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, fine fescue |
| Best establishment method | Seeding |
| Spring seeding window | May 15 to June 5 |
| Fall seeding window | September 17 to October 8 |
Boulder's cool, semiarid climate means your lawn faces a double challenge: alkaline soil and limited water. The good news? Cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue thrive here when you time things right.
Seeding windows are short (and worth protecting)
Aim for mid-May or late September when soil temps cooperate. Prep matters more than you'd think: loosen compacted soil and consider a light amendment to balance that alkalinity. One common mistake? Overwatering new seed in dry air. Keep it moist, not soggy. Our seed finder tool can help match your yard's needs.
