Sunday brings smarter lawn care to Fort Collins

Fort Collins sits where the Rockies meet the high plains. Your lawn feels every bit of that geography.

The cool semiarid climate means dry summers and cold winters that test even the toughest grass. Sunday uses data from over 500 local soil samples to build nutrient plans that actually fit Colorado's Front Range conditions.

Why Fort Collins lawns need a local approach

    • Alkaline soil (pH 7.7) needs adjusted nutrient delivery
    • Clay-heavy ground compacts after freeze-thaw cycles
    • Cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass thrive here

Lawn care for Fort Collins, Colorado

Average lawn size 2,377 sq ft (based on 500+ local soil tests)
Dominant grass type Cool-season grasses like bluegrass, ryegrass, and fescue
Typical soil pH 7.7 (slightly alkaline)
    Organic matter 5.4%
Soil composition 32% sand, 34% silt, 34% clay (clay loam)
Key nutrients Potassium 398 ppm, phosphorus 110 ppm, calcium 4,635 ppm

Fort Collins lawns come with a few quirks. The clay loam soil holds water well but can get compacted. Alkaline conditions (pH around 7.7) mean some nutrients need a little help getting absorbed. The good news? Your soil's already rich in organic matter, so you're starting ahead.

Fort Collins lawn care starts with understanding your clay

That clay-heavy soil loves to compact, especially after Colorado's freeze-thaw cycles. Aerate in fall to give roots room to breathe. One common mistake here: overwatering. Your soil holds moisture longer than you'd think, so deep, infrequent watering beats daily sprinkles every time. For more seasonal tips, check out our lawn guides.

    Lawn Care in Boulder

We are very happy Sunday customers in our second year of Lawn Care Program. After a rough winter we decided to over-seed using your Fescue Mix. Bare patches gone, lawn is much healthier. Easy to use, our cat's much happier with your products. Of course, 12 inches of Spring rain didn't hurt either.

    Colorado Lawn Transformation

Sunday was a game changing experience for my lawn. Even though lawn care is a seasonal tasks in Colorado it can still be a challenge with frequent changes in temperature and moisture on an annual basis. My yard was very patchy and overrun by weeds when we moved in back in 2017. I found Sunday in the Spring of 2019 after searching for fertilizer safe for my pets. The yard has transformed over the past two years and continues to improve with each application. I appreciate the excellent customer experience as well whenever I have a question or concern.

      Fort Collins, Colorado FAQs

Professional lawn care services can run up to $1,500 per year. Sunday's custom plans start at $55 for your first box and include pesticide-free nutrients, free soil analysis, and expert consultations. Most families save hundreds compared to traditional services.

The 1/3 rule means never cutting more than one-third of your grass blade height at once. This keeps roots strong and reduces stress on your lawn. For Fort Collins cool-season grasses, aim for a final fall cut around 2-3 inches.

For Fort Collins cool-season lawns, fall is prime time. Apply fertilizer late August through mid-October while grass is actively growing and soil stays warm. Spring feeding works too, once temperatures hold steady between 50-85°F.

Lawn service typically means hiring pros to mow, trim, and maintain your yard. Lawn care focuses on feeding and nurturing the soil and grass itself. Sunday handles the care part with custom nutrient plans shipped to your door (you just hose them on).

Sunday's custom plans include pesticide-free nutrients tailored to your lawn size and Fort Collins climate, a free soil test, personalized application schedule, expert Yard Advisor access, and Sunny (our AI yard companion). Add weed control or grass seed as needed.

Fort Collins offers rebates for replacing traditional turf with water-wise landscaping. If you're keeping grass, Sunday helps you grow a resilient lawn with custom nutrients and smart watering guidance that works with Colorado's climate (not against it).

How to grow grass in Fort Collins, Colorado

Recommended grass species Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, fine fescue
      Best establishment method Seeding
Spring seeding window May 15 to June 5
Fall seeding window September 12 to October 3

Fort Collins lawns face a classic high-desert challenge: alkaline soil, limited water, and temperature swings that test even hardy grasses. Cool-season varieties like Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue thrive here when timed right.

Why fall seeding wins in the Front Range

Your best window lands mid-September through early October, when soil stays warm but air cools down. Grab some premium grass seed and water deeply but infrequently to push roots past that alkaline topsoil. Skip the common mistake of spring seeding too early (frost will humble you fast).
