Lawn care for Salt Lake City, Utah

Average lawn size 2,375 sq ft (based on 600+ local soil tests)
Dominant grass type Cool-season grasses like bluegrass, ryegrass, and fescue
Typical soil pH 7.8 (slightly alkaline)
    Organic matter 5.03%
Soil composition 35% sand, 47% silt, 18% clay (silt loam)
Key nutrients Potassium 329 ppm, phosphorus 89 ppm, calcium 4,202 ppm

Salt Lake City lawns come with a few quirks worth knowing. The soil here runs alkaline and silty, which means water drains well but nutrients can get locked up. Cool-season grasses thrive, though our dry summers and cold winters keep things interesting.

What alkaline soil means for your lawn care

That high pH (around 7.8) can make iron and other micronutrients harder for grass to absorb, even when they're technically present. Water deeply but less often to encourage roots to reach down. Avoid over-fertilizing with phosphorus since local soils already have plenty. One common mistake? Watering too frequently and too shallow, which weakens roots fast. Our lawn guides break down what actually works here.

Healthy, green, and easy to use!

Applying Sunday lawn care is so much easier and more enjoyable to me than spreading granule fertilizer with a spreader. I used to always stress about even spreading—not anymore! Our grass looked fantastic all summer, even through really extended high temps. I can’t wait to see how it greens up in the spring, as I feel like my lawn has always been the last to get green on my street!

    Sunday is the best day

A few things that I love about Sunday. 1) Cost - I pay $150-$200 for all of my lawn care needs now vs $100+ per application when I was with TruGreen. 2) It is so easy to spray my lawn. Just hook up to the hose and go with ease. 3) Any questions about my care and I have a person who knows my area willing to help. 4) The first package of the year has a special bonus of flower seeds to plant. Amazing

    Simple and easy

You get a ton of product for the price, so hopefully it will lay well into the next season. I have a few dead patches after construction crew spilled some paint on the grass. The product was easy to use and I already see small grass peaking through. So exciting!

      Salt Lake City, Utah FAQs

Traditional lawn care services can run up to $1,500 per year. Sunday's first box starts at $55 and includes a custom nutrient plan, free soil analysis, and expert consultations. Full plan costs vary by lawn size and any add-ons you choose.

The 1/3 rule means never cutting more than one-third of your grass blade height at once. This keeps roots strong and reduces stress. For Salt Lake City lawns, set your mower to the highest setting and mow when grass reaches 3-4 inches.

Water deeply 2-3 times per week (mornings work best), mow high, and leave clippings to break down as natural fertilizer. A soil test helps identify what nutrients your lawn actually needs. Consistent feeding through the growing season builds resilience over time.

Sunday plans include custom pesticide-free nutrients, a personalized application schedule, free soil analysis, and expert Yard Advisor consultations. You can add weed control, grass seed, or pest control based on your yard's needs. Products ship in 2-4 seasonal deliveries.

DIY plans like Sunday start at $55 for the first box and can save you hundreds compared to traditional services (which run up to $1,500 yearly). You get custom nutrients, soil testing, and expert support without the professional service markup.

Look for plans customized to your specific lawn size, local climate, and soil conditions. Sunday uses satellite imagery and regional data to build personalized plans. A good provider should include soil testing, clear application schedules, and access to real experts.

How to grow grass in Salt Lake City, Utah

Recommended grass species Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, fine fescue
      Best establishment method Seeding
Spring seeding window May 2 to May 23
Fall seeding window September 23 to October 14

Salt Lake City's semiarid climate means your lawn faces a double challenge: cold winters and hot, dry summers. The good news? Cool-season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue thrive here when you time things right and prep for alkaline soil.

Your best planting windows are tighter than you'd think

Aim for early May or late September to give seed the mild temps it needs. Amend your soil to balance that natural alkalinity (a simple soil test tells you exactly what's needed). One common mistake? Overwatering during establishment. Deep, less frequent soaks beat daily sprinkles every time. Find the right seed with our seed finder or browse premium grass seed and grass seed guides.
