    Lawn care for Stafford, Virginia

Average lawn size 4,190 sq ft
Dominant grass type Cool-season grasses like tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and ryegrass
Typical soil pH 5.8 (slightly acidic)
    Organic matter 3.98%
Soil composition 48% sand, 36% silt, 16% clay (loam)
Key nutrients Potassium 120 ppm, phosphorus 28 ppm, calcium 1,448 ppm

Stafford lawns grow in loamy soil that drains well and holds nutrients. The slightly acidic pH works fine for cool-season grasses, though it can limit how much fertilizer actually reaches roots. Humidity keeps things interesting (read: fungus loves it here too).

Why Stafford lawn care starts below the surface

That loam is a gift, but acidic soil means lime applications every few years help your fescue actually use what you feed it. Water deeply but less often to discourage shallow roots and fungal problems. One common mistake? Overwatering in humid stretches when the ground's already holding moisture. The best grass seed

I live in VA and the summers are rough on my front lawn. This seed has been the best product in early fall after the harsh sun! Each year it brings it back to life! Definitely recommend.

Lawn is looking better but not perfect

I've been using Sunday products for close to 3 years. My lawn has certainly gotten better with each year so it does take quite some time. My only concern is the weeds. Their products do help but I wish there was weed control built in to their products because I usually have to try another brand to keep them away and this is after pulling weeds myself constantly. Overall, Sunday products are still worth it over paying thousands to get a company to take care of the lawn

      Stafford, Virginia FAQs

Traditional lawn care services can run up to $1,500 per year. Sunday's first box starts at $55, and full custom plans vary by lawn size and add-ons. Every plan includes a free soil analysis, personalized schedule, and expert consultations.

October is not too late to mow in Stafford. Gradually lower your mowing height throughout fall, aiming for a final cut of 2-3 inches. This helps prevent winter diseases and sets your lawn up for a stronger spring comeback.

The 1/3 rule means never cutting more than one-third of the grass height at a time. This prevents stress and helps grow thicker turf that's more resilient to weeds. Mow on the highest setting for best results.

Full-service lawn care typically includes fertilization, weed control, pest management, seeding, and soil testing. Sunday's custom plans cover nutrient applications, soil analysis, and expert guidance. You can add weed control, grass seed, and pest solutions as needed.

A custom nutrient plan that ships what you need, when you need it. Sunday removes the guesswork with personalized schedules and products based on your soil and climate. Just attach the pouch to a hose and spray.

Tipping depends on the service. For professional crews, 10-20% or $10-20 per visit is common for exceptional work. With DIY options like Sunday, you handle applications yourself, so no tipping required (unless you want to thank yourself).

How to grow grass in Stafford, Virginia

Recommended grass species Tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, fine fescue
      Best establishment method Seeding
Spring seeding window April 18 to May 11
Fall seeding window September 18 to October 9

Stafford sits in the humid transition zone, which means your lawn deals with hot, sticky summers and the fungal pressure that comes with them. The good news? Cool-season grasses like tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass thrive here with the right timing.

Why fall seeding wins in Stafford every time

Your best window for premium grass seed is mid-September through early October, when soil temps drop but roots still have time to dig in. Stafford's naturally acidic soil benefits from a quick pH test before you plant. The most common mistake? Seeding in spring and watching summer heat stress undo all that work. Find the right grass for my yard to match your specific conditions.
