Lawn care built for Upper Marlboro yards

Between the horse farms and historic courthouse, Upper Marlboro knows a thing or two about taking care of land. Your lawn faces that humid transition zone climate where summer moisture can turn friendly grass into a fungal playground.

Sunday builds custom lawn plans using satellite imagery of your actual yard and data from over 100 local soil samples across Maryland. We match nutrients to what your soil actually needs (not what some generic bag guesses).

    • Sandy loam soil that drains fast but dries quickly
    • Cool-season grasses like tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass

Lawn care for Upper Marlboro, Maryland

Average lawn size 3,790 sq ft
Dominant grass type Cool-season grasses like tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and perennial ryegrass
Typical soil pH 6.2 (slightly acidic)
    Organic matter 4.0%
Soil composition 56% sand, 34% silt, 10% clay (sandy loam)
Key nutrients Potassium 129 ppm, phosphorus 94.5 ppm, calcium 1,408.5 ppm

Upper Marlboro lawns have a lot going for them. That sandy loam drains well, the pH sits in a happy zone, and organic matter is solid. The challenge? Humidity loves to invite fungal guests, and sandy soil can dry out faster than you'd expect.

Sandy soil and lawn care in Upper Marlboro

Your soil drains quickly (great for roots, tricky for water retention). Water deeply but less often to encourage grass to dig down instead of staying shallow. That humid climate means airflow matters. Mow at the right height and avoid evening watering, which can leave grass damp overnight and vulnerable. One common mistake: fertilizing too heavily in summer heat, which stresses cool-season grasses. Check out our lawn guides for timing tips.

    Let's get started

      Upper Marlboro, Maryland FAQs

DIY lawn care in Upper Marlboro typically runs $80 to a few hundred dollars per year depending on lawn size and products. Sunday's custom plans start at $55 for your first box, with full-season plans tailored to your specific yard size and local growing conditions.

Stop mowing in Upper Marlboro when grass goes dormant, usually late November through early December. Cool-season grasses like fescue slow growth when temperatures consistently drop below 50°F. Resume mowing in spring once your lawn is about 60% greened up.

Sunday delivers custom lawn plans directly to Upper Marlboro homes. Each plan includes pesticide-free nutrients matched to your soil and local climate, a free soil test, personalized schedules, and access to Yard Advisors who can help troubleshoot any lawn questions.

Sunday uses satellite imagery combined with your address to estimate lawn size automatically. When you enter your Upper Marlboro address, the mapping tool calculates your grass coverage. You can adjust this estimate if needed, with plans available from 500 to 33,000 sq ft.

Upper Marlboro lawns benefit from 2 to 4 fertilizer applications spread across the growing season. Sunday's custom plans time shipments to local conditions so nutrients arrive when your grass actually needs them. Apply when temperatures stay between 50°F and 85°F.

Overseeding means spreading grass seed over your existing lawn to thicken turf and crowd out weeds. In Upper Marlboro, the best windows are early spring and fall when cool-season grasses germinate well. Wait until about 60% of new seed sprouts before fertilizing.

How to grow grass in Upper Marlboro, Maryland

Recommended grass species Tall fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, fine fescue
      Best establishment method Seeding
Spring seeding window April 15 to May 14
Fall seeding window September 18 to October 14

Upper Marlboro sits in the humid transition zone, which means your lawn gets the best (and trickiest) of both worlds. Cool-season grasses like tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass thrive here, but summer humidity can invite fungal issues if you're not careful.

Why fall seeding wins in Prince George's County

Mid-September through mid-October is your sweet spot for seeding. The soil's still warm, but cooler air keeps moisture from becoming a fungus factory. One common mistake? Watering too late in the day. Morning irrigation lets blades dry before nightfall. Grab some premium grass seed or find the right grass for my yard to match your conditions.
