At Sunday, we believe that a better lawn means a better planet for all of us, and we know that the work we do in our backyards is just the beginning. As a 1% for the Planet business, we donate a portion of every sale to helping people reconnect with nature and preserve important habitats, including organizations like the Joseph H. Williams Tallgrass Prairie Preserve.

At nearly 40,000 acres, the preserve is the largest protected tallgrass prairie on Earth. More than 700 species of plants, 300 species of birds and 80 types of mammals call this prairie home, including 2,500 free-ranging bison. This intricate ecosystem stretches for 60 square miles, which is just a fraction of the space that it used to occupy. Once, it was one of the largest ecosystems in all of North America, with a complex cultural history dating back centuries.

By partnering with the preserve, we’re able to support them as they work to maintain and protect this biologically diverse and rich landscape. To date, more than 200 scientific publications have come off the preserve. And it doesn’t just serve as home to thousands of animals and plant life – it also works as a carbon storage bank by sequestering carbon in its soil. This can help mitigate the effects of climate change and contribute to clean air and clean water. Beyond carbon sequestration, tallgrass prairies provide a variety of other benefits to the ecosystem. This can include flood management and abatement, water filtration and providing support to pollinators like birds and butterflies.

We know that healthy lands start from the ground up – literally. We work with other groups to improve soil health, reduce pesticides that could get into our waterways, and conserve key habitats like prairie grasslands. We believe in supporting fully integrated ecosystems, not just in a unique setting like the tallgrass prairie but also in our very own backyards. After all, it’s the same soil that gives life to these places that are so important to us. And with a more thoughtful approach to our lawns, we believe that together, we can have a positive impact on people and the planet.

Finally, this partnership reaffirms how important our customers are. Check out the full video to learn more about how your Sunday lawn contributes to the restoration and preservation of the remaining American tallgrass prairie.
