Growing grass in shade with your Custom Lawn Plan
Your Custom Lawn Plan won't be affected by the shaded areas in your yard. Plans are based on climate, lawn size, grass type (warm- or cool-season), local regulations, and soil test results.
However, many grass types struggle in high-shade environments, often becoming sparse and inviting weeds. Shaded areas often face the additional challenge of tree competition for nutrients and water. Use our guide on how to grow a lawn in the shade for best practices.
For shaded spots, consider planting shade-tolerant grass varieties. For northern or transitional U.S. zones, our Shade Select mix of fine fescue grasses is specifically designed for low-light conditions. If you have a warm-season lawn, we recommend varieties like Zoysiagrass or St. Augustine grass.
