Ingredients

Three premium fine fescue varieties. Fine fescue is a group of cool-season grasses known for thriving in low light and poor soils. This blend combines three distinct fine fescue types, each selected for shade tolerance, disease resistance, and the ability to grow where other grasses give up. Together they produce a dense, dark green lawn that handles foot traffic, insects, and challenging growing conditions.

How to use

Plant in spring or fall when temperatures stay between 55 and 75 degrees F. You can also dormant seed in winter below 40 degrees F.

  1. Pick your seeding rate. For overseeding, use 2 lbs per 1,000 sq ft. For heavy repair or new lawns, use 5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft.
  2. Set your spreader to the lowest setting. Apply seed uniformly across the area, working in one direction first, then crossing back the other way for even coverage.
  3. Water the seed right away. Water lightly to make sure the seed is in contact with the soil, and has access to moisture.
  4. Keep the soil moist for 1 to 3 weeks. Light, frequent watering is better than one heavy soak. The goal is consistent moisture until germination, which takes 6 to 14 days.
  5. Hold off on mowing. Let the new grass reach 3 to 4 inches before you mow for the first time.

What is the difference between Shade Select and Fescue Rescue?

Shade Select Grass Seed is a fine fescue blend built for full shade and tough soil.

Fescue Rescue is a tall fescue blend made for sun to partial shade. If your yard gets less than 4 hours of direct light, Shade Select is your pick.

Is fine fescue or tall fescue better for shaded lawns?

Shade Select Grass Seed uses fine fescue because it thrives in low light and needs less water and mowing. Tall fescue handles some shade but does best with more sun. For deep shade, fine fescue wins every time.

When is the best time to plant Shade Select Grass Seed?

Shade Select Grass Seed grows best when planted in spring or fall when temps are between 55 and 75 degrees F. You can also dormant seed in winter below 40 degrees F and let it pop up when conditions are right.

How long does Shade Select Grass Seed take to germinate?

Shade Select Grass Seed germinates in 6 to 14 days when you keep the seed consistently moist. Water lightly 1-3 times a day depending on rainfall. The 85% germination rate means you will see solid, even coverage.

Can I plant Shade Select in areas that also get some sun?

Shade Select Grass Seed works great in sunny spots too. Fine fescue thrives in both full sun and full shade, so you can use it across your whole yard without switching blends. Less planning, more growing.

Can I mix Shade Select with a different grass type for sunny areas?

Shade Select Grass Seed pairs well with other grass types in your yard. Use it at 5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft for new areas or 2 lbs per 1,000 sq ft for overseeding. The fine fescue blend fills in nicely alongside other cool season grasses.
