Helpful Tips from Lawn Advisors:

What is fine fescue?

Fine fescue is a fine-textured grass seed that forms a deep green lawn. It is highly tolerant of shade, can resist stress when established, and stands up to high traffic, making it perfect for active, low-light outdoor spaces.

Can I plant this throughout my lawn if it’s not all shaded?

Yes! This blend contains fine fescue, which thrives in full sun and shade. It’s OK if it’s not the same grass type as the rest of your lawn because diversity creates strength and resilience against insects and disease.

When to plant fescue grass seed?

The optimal time to seed this mix is during spring and fall when temperatures consistently range between 55 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. You can also seed this mix in winter months when temperatures consistently fall below 40 degrees F.

How long does fescue grass seed take to grow?

Expect germination between 6-12 days.

How to plant fescue grass seed

  1. Apply at the correct rate. For overseeding, use 2 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft.; for starting a new lawn from scratch, use 5 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. For patching, cover the area lightly with seed and topdress with compost or a light layer of soil if desired.
  2. Start at the lowest setting and apply uniformly. For hand or drop spreader applications, no matter the spreader type, always begin at the lowest setting. Increase the spreader setting if the seed is getting stuck or not easily distributed. Walk at a consistent pace across the lawn to distribute seed uniformly. Check after application for uniformity and reapply in areas where coverage is light.
  3. Water the seed to germination. Keep the seed moist, not oversaturated, until the grass seed germinates—depending on the grass type, this can be 1-3 weeks. Avoid letting new or germinating seeds dry out to ensure successful seeding.

NOT non-gmo

Unfortunately none of their seeds are non-gmo. Just what we need, more bee killing chemicals.

Thank you for sharing your concern! All of our seed blends are non-gmo. In fact, there are only 13 GMO crops in the United States, and we don't sell any of those seed types. If you're interested in learning more about our seed blends, please feel free to reach out to our support team. You can reach them at [email protected] or by calling 415-903-6932.

Shade Grass Seed

So far this has been the best type of grass seed we have used for those stubborn areas of our lawn that don’t see the sun!

Dark, lush green

We dig our Shade Select grass seed! It did what it is supposed to do: grow. A nice dark, lush green color. We’ve been using it to patch areas of our yard that need a little help but don’t see much sunshine during the growing season, as well as other areas that do see sun. It thrives in both. We also...

Green grass in the shade

I have an area by my back fence that has trees from the neighbors side that comely shade the area most of the day. I've tried so many different seed types and brands, and Sunday's Shade Select Grass seed has been the only one that has grown there. The crazy part is that is also the greenest section ...

Great for Areas with Shade from Mature Trees

We love the mature Oak trees in our front yard, but the shade has made it challenging to get grass established in areas that were previously covered only with moss and weeds. Shade Select to the rescue! It's hardy enough for our Illinois winters, and there's not even a hint of weed seeds mixed in li...

It grows well, in shady

It grows well, in shady areas. It is very thin, of course, but I have really noticed the difference after planting again this fall and watching it grow into this new spring season. I plan on overseeding it this spring as well!

Shade Seed Works Well

Seed came in well although I had to reseed and restraw a couple times due to squirrel activity.
