Sunday lawn care guide tips for new sod and seed

It depends on whether you're working with new sod or new seed. Sunday products are safe for both, but timing matters.

New sod comes pre-fertilized from the grower, so it doesn't need extra nutrients right away.
  • Give it a few weeks to settle in and root down before applying anything.
  • Try lifting a corner. If the sod resists and stays put, it's rooted and ready.
  • If it peels up easily, it's not there yet. Applying too soon can actually work against you.

New seed is more forgiving. You can apply Sunday fertilizer right after planting without worrying about harming your seedlings. That said, you'll get the best results if you wait until about 60% of the seed is actively growing, which is roughly three weeks after planting.

In the meantime, keep the soil consistently moist and stay off it as much as possible. Little grass legs need time to find their footing.

If you're overseeding an existing lawn, the same timing applies.
