Is Sunday fertilizer safe to use before or after overseeding

Sunday fertilizers are 100% pesticide-free, so they won't harm new grass seed or seedlings. You can apply Sunday lawn fertilizer before or after overseeding without worry.

But timing matters for best results. For best results: Seed first, then wait until about 60% of the grass has sprouted (roughly 1-3 weeks) before applying nutrients. Seedlings that haven't broken through the soil yet can't absorb much, so waiting gives them a real chance to take it in.

Sunday Tip: Three weeks is approximate. Watch your lawn, not the calendar. Once you see that majority of new growth coming in, you're good to go.

A couple of things worth knowing before you get started:
  1. Sunday lawn fertilizer pouches don't contain seed. If you're filling in bare spots, you'll need to grab seed separately. The Sun & Shade Seed + Feed combines both if you want a 2 in 1 option.
  2. Nutrients alone won't prep bare soil for new growth. If you're working with a patchy or bare area, you'll need to address the soil first. Check out tips on new sod and seed or our guide on topdressing your lawn.
  3. For watering guidance to newly seeded areas, see our overseeding video and step-by-step guide.

What about applying weed control around overseeded areas?
If you're wondering about pre-emergent or post-emergent weed control timing around overseeding, that's a separate question from fertilizer.

You'll need to wait at least 1 day between applying Dandelion Doom or Weed & Green and seeding or planting, or at least 5 days between Weed Warrior and seeding (or planting). For all other non-Sunday weed control products, thoroughly check the label for wait times to avoid wasting seeds (or your hard-earned dollars).
