Lawn care in Allen built for Texas clay

Allen sits in the heart of Collin County, where summer humidity rolls in thick and stays awhile. That's great for backyard hangouts. Less great for lawns that don't know how to handle the moisture.

Sunday uses satellite imagery and local soil data from over 200 Allen yards to build plans that actually fit your property. Lawn care in Allen, Texas works best when it starts with what's already in the ground.

What Sunday uses to customize your Allen lawn plan

    • Proprietary lawn analysis based on local alkaline clay conditions
    • Warm-season grass support for Bermuda and St. Augustine
    • Nutrient timing matched to your yard's specific needs
    • Products designed for families, pets, and bare feet

    Lawn care for Allen, Texas

Average lawn size 2,806 sq ft
    Dominant grass type Warm-season grasses
Typical soil pH 7.8 (slightly alkaline)
    Organic matter 4.2%
Soil composition 15% sand, 32% silt, 52% clay (clay soil)
Key nutrients Potassium 224 ppm, phosphorus 29 ppm, calcium 6,845 ppm

Allen lawns come with a tradeoff. That heavy clay soil holds moisture well but drains slowly and compacts easily. The alkaline pH can lock up nutrients before roots get a chance. Good news? Warm-season grasses like Bermuda and St. Augustine actually thrive here once you work with the soil instead of against it.

Why Allen lawn care starts underground

Clay-heavy yards need aeration more than most. Skip it, and you're basically asking grass roots to grow through concrete. Water deeply but less often to encourage roots to reach down. One common mistake? Overwatering in summer, which turns clay into a soggy mess and invites fungal problems. Our lawn guides can help you time things right.

Living in San Antonio where we are under drought restrictions, managing a lawn is challenging. My Sunday plan supplemented with Drought Defense and Water Focus has produced amazing results on my turf. Add to that the ease and effectiveness of Weed Warrior on my rock beds, this company has a BIG fan.

    Texas Lawn

It is super convenient to have your lawn treatment mailed to your door and ready for application. I find the hints for when and how to apply very helpful as well as the hints for lawn care. With all the news about rising prices of fertilizer I was worried my rates would change just prior to the spring season, but Sunday held the prices for the membership steady. I would love to tell you how great my lawn looks today, but here in central Texas I am just happy my lawn is still alive with the water restrictions in place.

      Allen, Texas FAQs

Professional lawn care services can run up to $1,500 per year. Sunday's custom plans start at $55 for your first box and include pesticide-free nutrients, a free soil analysis, and expert consultations. Most homeowners save hundreds compared to traditional services.

The 1/3 rule means never cutting more than one-third of your grass blade height at once. For Allen's warm-season grasses like Bermuda, this typically means mowing down to 3 to 3.5 inches. Cutting too short stresses roots and invites weeds.

Lawn service typically means mowing and basic maintenance. Lawn care goes deeper with fertilization, soil health, weed management, and seasonal treatments. Sunday delivers custom lawn care plans to your door so you can DIY the science-backed stuff yourself.

Leaks, clogged heads, and uneven coverage top the list. Allen's hot summers make broken sprinklers especially costly. Audit your system each spring by checking for puddling, dry spots, and blocked spray patterns. Fix leaks quickly to avoid wasting water and stressing your lawn.

Yes, most basic repairs are DIY-friendly. Clogged heads just need cleaning, and cracked risers or broken heads are simple swaps. Check for leaks, clear debris blocking spray patterns, and test coverage regularly. Save the pros for major line breaks or complex valve issues.

Local community groups, churches, and volunteer organizations sometimes offer free mowing for seniors, veterans, or those facing hardship. Check with Allen's parks department or neighborhood associations. Some neighbors also swap yard help informally (a six-pack goes a long way).

How to grow grass in Allen, Texas

Recommended grass species Bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, St. Augustinegrass
Best establishment method Seeding, sodding, or plugging
Spring seeding window April 20 to June 1

Allen's warm, humid climate and alkaline clay soil create ideal conditions for heat-loving grasses like Bermuda, zoysia, and St. Augustine. The challenge? That same humidity invites fungal issues if you're not careful with watering.

Your spring planting window closes faster than you think

Late April through early June is prime time for establishing warm-season turf here. Prep soil by loosening that stubborn clay and water deeply but infrequently (overwatering is the most common Allen mistake). Whether you're seeding, sodding, or plugging, timing matters more than perfection.
