Lawn care for College Station, Texas

Average lawn size 4,136 sq ft
Dominant grass type warm-season grasses like bermudagrass, St. Augustine, and zoysia
    Typical soil pH 8.1 (alkaline)
    Organic matter 2.8%
Soil composition 64% sand, 27% silt, 9% clay (sandy loam)
Key nutrients potassium 147 ppm, phosphorus 35 ppm, calcium 2,941 ppm

College Station lawns come with sandy soil that drains fast and a high pH that can lock up nutrients. The good news? Warm-season grasses like bermuda and St. Augustine actually thrive here once you work with the soil instead of against it.

Why alkaline soil changes your lawn care game

That 8.1 pH means iron and other micronutrients don't absorb as easily, so yellow patches aren't always a watering problem. One common mistake is adding more fertilizer when the real issue is soil chemistry. Focus on slow, steady feeding and avoid overwatering sandy loam (it dries out fast, but roots need oxygen too). LOVE LOVE LOVE SUNDAY!

I love Sunday products! My lawn was just planted in November 2020 and it's already growing great. It survived a harsh winter, heavy rains in spring and summer, and a 30-day drought. Can't recommend this product enough!

    Our Best TX Lawn

Having owned multiple homes in TX. It’s such a wonderfully simple and seamless solution for my lawn. I don’t have to stress about which product is “the right one“ or when “the right time” is to apply. Our yard has never looked better! My spouse and I look at our lawn everyday and say with confidence “looks great!” I recommend it to everyone!

    Texas Lawn

It is super convenient to have your lawn treatment mailed to your door and ready for application. I find the hints for when and how to apply very helpful as well as the hints for lawn care. With all the news about rising prices of fertilizer I was worried my rates would change just prior to the spring season, but Sunday held the prices for the membership steady. I would love to tell you how great my lawn looks today, but here in central Texas I am just happy my lawn is still alive with the water restrictions in place.

    Texas = Hot

Easy application and real time support, couldn’t be happier with the system. Had issues this past year with fungus growing, fixed with a better watering plan. Now my issue is the brutal Texas heat.

      College Station, Texas FAQs

Professional lawn care services can run up to $1,500 per year. Sunday's custom plans start at $55 for the first box and include a free soil analysis, personalized schedule, and expert consultations. Total cost varies by lawn size and any add-ons you choose.

Never cut more than one-third of your grass height at a time. This prevents stress on your turf and helps grow thicker grass that naturally crowds out weeds. Mow on the highest setting and let those clippings stay put for free nutrients.

Grasscycle by leaving clippings on your lawn after mowing. They break down and return nutrients to the soil for free. Water deeply two to three times per week instead of daily, and pull weeds by hand before they spread.

Warm-season grasses like Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine thrive in College Station's hot climate. These varieties handle heat and drought well. For shadier spots, Zoysia and St. Augustine offer better tolerance than Bermuda.

A complete lawn care routine includes fertilizing, mowing, watering, weed control, and overseeding. Sunday plans deliver custom nutrients, a free soil test, personalized schedule, and expert consultations. You can add weed control, grass seed, and pest solutions as needed.

Water your lawn first so it absorbs nutrients better. Apply fertilizer, then remove weeds by hand or spot treat. Mow on the highest setting, then seed any bare patches. Wait 7 to 10 days between fertilizer applications.

How to grow grass in College Station, Texas

Recommended grass species Bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, St. Augustinegrass, centipedegrass
Best establishment method Seeding, sodding, or plugging
Spring seeding window April 5 to May 17

College Station's warm, humid climate and alkaline soil make it prime territory for heat-loving grasses like Bermuda, zoysia, and St. Augustine. The challenge? Humidity invites fungal issues, so moisture management matters more than you'd think.

Your spring planting window is tighter than it looks

Aim to seed or sod between early April and mid-May, when soil temps climb but summer's brutal heat hasn't arrived. Prep alkaline soil with a quick pH check (most local spots run high). One common mistake: overwatering new grass in humid conditions, which basically rolls out a welcome mat for fungus.
