Lawn care for Corpus Christi, Texas

Average lawn size 2,361 sq ft (based on local soil tests)
    Dominant grass type Warm-season grasses
Typical soil pH 7.8 (slightly alkaline)
    Organic matter 3.24%
Soil composition 26% sand, 23% silt, 51% clay (clay-heavy soil)
Key nutrients Potassium 394 ppm, phosphorus 48 ppm, calcium 4,194 ppm

Corpus Christi lawns come with a trade-off: warm-season grasses love your sun and heat, but that heavy clay soil can be stubborn. Water drains slowly, roots work harder, and the alkaline pH means some nutrients play hard to get. The good news? Once you understand your dirt, everything else gets simpler.

Why clay-heavy soil changes your lawn care game

That 51% clay holds moisture well (a perk during dry spells) but compacts easily. One common mistake: watering too often instead of deep and infrequent. Shallow watering keeps roots lazy. Go longer between drinks and let that water soak down. Your slightly alkaline soil ties up iron, so watch for yellowing grass. Check out our lawn guides for more on feeding clay-bound yards.

    South Texas Fan

Living in San Antonio where we are under drought restrictions, managing a lawn is challenging. My Sunday plan supplemented with Drought Defense and Water Focus has produced amazing results on my turf. Add to that the ease and effectiveness of Weed Warrior on my rock beds, this company has a BIG fan.

    Texas Lawn

It is super convenient to have your lawn treatment mailed to your door and ready for application. I find the hints for when and how to apply very helpful as well as the hints for lawn care. With all the news about rising prices of fertilizer I was worried my rates would change just prior to the spring season, but Sunday held the prices for the membership steady. I would love to tell you how great my lawn looks today, but here in central Texas I am just happy my lawn is still alive with the water restrictions in place.

      Corpus Christi, Texas FAQs

Professional lawn care services can run up to $1,500 per year. Sunday's custom plans start at $55 for your first box, potentially saving hundreds while delivering pesticide-free nutrients tailored to your lawn size and local South Texas climate.

Never cut more than one-third of your grass blade height at a time. This prevents stress on your lawn and encourages thicker, more resilient turf that naturally crowds out weeds. Mow on the highest setting for best results.

Mow when your grass reaches about 3 to 4 inches, typically weekly during active growth. Avoid mowing during the hottest part of the day. Morning or evening works best, and leave those clippings behind for free nutrients.

Landscapers handle mowing, fertilizing, weed control, and irrigation. With Sunday, you can DIY the fertilizing part yourself. Just attach a nutrient pouch to your hose and spray. Custom plans arrive when your lawn needs them.

The rule of 3 refers to cutting no more than one-third of grass height per mow. This keeps roots healthy and builds stronger turf over time. Pair it with deep, infrequent watering for a lawn that handles Texas heat.

Professional services and irrigation repairs typically cost the most. Sunday helps reduce expenses with DIY-friendly custom plans starting at $55. You get pesticide-free nutrients, a free soil test, and expert guidance without the big price tag.

How to grow grass in Corpus Christi, Texas

Recommended grass species Bermudagrass, st. augustinegrass, zoysiagrass, seashore paspalum
Best establishment method Seeding, sodding, or plugging
Spring seeding window March 27 to May 8

Corpus Christi lawns face a triple challenge: salty coastal air, alkaline clay soil, and summers that test even the toughest turf. The good news? Warm-season grasses like Bermuda and St. Augustine actually thrive here once established.

Your spring planting window is shorter than you think

Late March through early May is prime time for seeding or sodding. Water deeply but infrequently to push roots down into that clay (daily light sprinkles just create shallow, wimpy grass). One common mistake? Skipping soil prep entirely. A little organic matter worked into alkaline soil goes a long way.
