Sunday's approach to lawn care in El Paso

El Paso sits where the Chihuahuan Desert meets the Franklin Mountains, and your lawn feels every bit of it. Summer heat pushes past 100°F while annual rainfall barely hits eight inches.

That's not a problem to solve. It's just the reality your yard lives in.

Sunday builds custom lawn plans for El Paso, Texas lawns using satellite imagery, local climate data, and our proprietary lawn analysis. We work with your desert conditions instead of pretending they don't exist.

Why El Paso yards need a local approach

    • Sandy soil drains fast and needs smarter watering
    • Alkaline pH shapes which nutrients actually reach roots
    • Warm-season grasses matched to your specific property
    • Seasonal timing based on real El Paso growing windows

Lawn care for El Paso, Texas

Average lawn size 1,251 sq ft (based on 300+ local soil tests)
Dominant grass type Warm-season grasses (with some cool-season lawns)
    Typical soil pH 7.9 (alkaline)
    Organic matter 2.81%
Soil composition 59% sand, 31% silt, 10% clay (sandy loam)
Key nutrients Potassium 325 ppm, phosphorus 131 ppm, calcium 3,750 ppm

El Paso lawns live in the desert, and they're surprisingly okay with it. Sandy soil drains fast (almost too fast), and that alkaline pH means your grass has strong opinions about what it'll accept. The good news? Warm-season grasses actually thrive here if you work with the land, not against it.

Desert lawn care means watering smarter, not harder

Your sandy loam won't hold moisture long, so deep, infrequent watering beats daily sprinkles every time. One common mistake? Overwatering to compensate for the heat, which just drowns roots and wastes water. Fertilize in late spring when bermuda and buffalo grass wake up hungry. South Texas Fan

Living in San Antonio where we are under drought restrictions, managing a lawn is challenging. My Sunday plan supplemented with Drought Defense and Water Focus has produced amazing results on my turf. Add to that the ease and effectiveness of Weed Warrior on my rock beds, this company has a BIG fan.

    Texas Lawn

It is super convenient to have your lawn treatment mailed to your door and ready for application. I find the hints for when and how to apply very helpful as well as the hints for lawn care. With all the news about rising prices of fertilizer I was worried my rates would change just prior to the spring season, but Sunday held the prices for the membership steady. I would love to tell you how great my lawn looks today, but here in central Texas I am just happy my lawn is still alive with the water restrictions in place.

    Texas = Hot

Easy application and real time support, couldn’t be happier with the system. Had issues this past year with fungus growing, fixed with a better watering plan. Now my issue is the brutal Texas heat.

      El Paso, Texas FAQs

Professional lawn care services can run up to $1,500 per year. Sunday offers a smarter alternative with custom plans starting at $55 for your first box. Plans include pesticide-free nutrients, free soil analysis, and expert consultations tailored to El Paso's desert climate.

Never cut more than one-third of your grass height at a time. This prevents stress, encourages deeper roots, and builds thicker turf that handles El Paso's heat. Mow on the highest setting and let those clippings stay put for free nutrients.

Warm-season grasses like Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine thrive in El Paso's hot, arid climate. These varieties handle heat and drought while staying resilient through summer. For shaded spots, Zoysia offers solid shade tolerance.

Watch for yellowing patches, thinning areas, or grass that looks blueish-gray and crispy. These often signal drought stress or nutrient deficiencies. A soil test reveals what's actually happening underground so you can target the real problem.

Full yard cleanup costs vary by property size and condition. For ongoing lawn health, Sunday plans start at $55 for your first box and save you hundreds compared to traditional services. Plans include custom nutrients and free soil analysis.

That's on the higher end for professional services. Sunday offers a DIY alternative with custom plans starting at $55 for your first box. You get pesticide-free nutrients, expert guidance, and everything shipped to your door when your lawn needs it.

How to grow grass in El Paso, Texas

Recommended grass species bermudagrass, buffalograss, zoysiagrass
Best establishment method seeding, sodding, or plugging
Spring seeding window April 4 to May 16
Fall seeding window October 1 to October 22

El Paso's desert heat and alkaline soil make lawn care feel like a high-stakes game. But the right warm-season grass (bermudagrass, buffalograss, or zoysiagrass) actually thrives here with less fuss than you'd expect.

Timing matters more than toughness in the desert

Your spring seeding window runs early April through mid-May, when soil temps finally cooperate. Fall offers a quick October window too. The biggest local mistake? Overwatering to compensate for heat. These grasses want deep, infrequent drinks, not daily sips. Start with premium grass seed matched to your yard.
