Lawn care for McKinney, Texas
| Average lawn size | 2,721 sq ft (based on 500+ local soil tests) |
| Dominant grass type | Warm-season grasses |
| Typical soil pH | 7.9 (slightly alkaline) |
| Organic matter | 3.59% |
| Soil composition | 15% sand, 32% silt, 52% clay (clay soil) |
| Key nutrients | Potassium 190 ppm, phosphorus 22 ppm, calcium 9,028 ppm |
McKinney lawns come with heavy clay soil and a slightly alkaline pH, which means water pools instead of soaking in. The good news? That clay holds nutrients well, and warm-season grasses thrive here once you work with the soil instead of against it.
What McKinney's clay soil means for lawn care
Your biggest challenge isn't feeding the lawn. It's helping water actually reach the roots. Aerate annually to break up compaction, and water deeply but less often (clay hates frequent shallow drinks). One common mistake? Over-fertilizing. Your soil already holds plenty of potassium and calcium. Check out our lawn guides for more on reading your soil's signals.

It beat the Texas heat!
The Micro Boost Liquid Fertilizer from Sunday has been nothing short of a revelation for my lawn care regimen. I live in Texas, a state notorious for its record-breaking summer heat, making it incredibly challenging to maintain a green, lush lawn. Before using this product, I tried multiple fertilizers with limited success, particularly in the peak of the summer. What sets Sunday's Micro Boost apart is its apparent resilience. Even in extreme temperatures, my grass remained mostly green. The texture and overall health of the lawn seemed to improve as well, displaying less of the brown patches and dry spots that are typical of a harsh Texan summer. The application process was very straightforward. The liquid formula is easy to distribute, and I felt confident knowing that I was using a product designed with environmental sustainability in mind.

Texas Lawn
It is super convenient to have your lawn treatment mailed to your door and ready for application. I find the hints for when and how to apply very helpful as well as the hints for lawn care. With all the news about rising prices of fertilizer I was worried my rates would change just prior to the spring season, but Sunday held the prices for the membership steady. I would love to tell you how great my lawn looks today, but here in central Texas I am just happy my lawn is still alive with the water restrictions in place.

Texas = Hot
Easy application and real time support, couldn’t be happier with the system. Had issues this past year with fungus growing, fixed with a better watering plan. Now my issue is the brutal Texas heat.

McKinney, Texas FAQs
How to grow grass in McKinney, Texas
| Recommended grass species | Bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, St. Augustinegrass |
| Best establishment method | Seeding, sodding, or plugging |
| Spring seeding window | April 20 to June 1 |
McKinney's hot summers and alkaline clay soil make warm-season grasses like Bermuda, zoysia, and St. Augustine your best bet. The trick is timing your planting right and not fighting the soil you've got.
Why late April is your green light
Seed or sod between late April and early June, when soil temps hit the sweet spot for root growth. Work some organic matter into that clay before planting to help drainage. One common mistake? Watering too often and too shallow. Deep, infrequent soaks train roots to dig down where moisture lasts.
