    Lawn care for Rockwall, Texas

Average lawn size 3,229 sq ft
Dominant grass type Warm-season grasses like bermudagrass, zoysia, and St. Augustine
Typical soil pH 7.9 (slightly alkaline)
    Organic matter 3.6%
Soil composition 21% sand, 23% silt, 56% clay (clay-heavy soil)
Key nutrients Potassium 200 ppm, phosphorus 19 ppm, calcium 6,731 ppm

Rockwall lawns grow in heavy clay soil that holds water tight and leans alkaline. That's great for warm-season grasses like bermuda and St. Augustine, but it means drainage can be tricky and nutrients don't always play nice.

Clay soil lawn care takes a lighter touch

With 56% clay underfoot, Rockwall yards compact easily. Aerate in late spring to give roots breathing room. Water deeply but less often (clay holds moisture longer than you'd think). One common mistake? Over-fertilizing to chase greener grass. Alkaline soil already locks up certain nutrients, so more isn't better. Check out our lawn guides for the full picture.

    Texas Lawn

It is super convenient to have your lawn treatment mailed to your door and ready for application. I find the hints for when and how to apply very helpful as well as the hints for lawn care. With all the news about rising prices of fertilizer I was worried my rates would change just prior to the spring season, but Sunday held the prices for the membership steady. I would love to tell you how great my lawn looks today, but here in central Texas I am just happy my lawn is still alive with the water restrictions in place.

We had a pool put in and were having a hard time getting our lawn to look lush again. Sunday helped greatly.

    Texas = Hot

Easy application and real time support, couldn’t be happier with the system. Had issues this past year with fungus growing, fixed with a better watering plan. Now my issue is the brutal Texas heat.

      Rockwall, Texas FAQs

Professional lawn care services can run up to $1,500 per year. Sunday's custom plans start at $55 for your first box and include a free soil analysis, personalized nutrient schedule, and expert consultations. Most folks save hundreds compared to traditional services while skipping the harsh chemicals.

The 1/3 rule means never cutting more than one-third of your grass blade height at once. For Rockwall's warm-season grasses, this typically means mowing down to 3 to 3.5 inches. Cutting too short stresses roots and invites weeds to move in.

Start with weed control, then apply fertilizer, followed by seeding if needed. For pest control, apply after fertilizer has dried. Wait 7 to 10 days between fertilizer applications. This sequence gives each product time to work without interference from the next.

Yes. October is prime time for fall fertilization in Rockwall. Soil stays warm while air cools, creating ideal conditions for root growth. Apply fertilizer when temperatures are between 50°F and 85°F, and your grass is actively growing rather than dormant.

Skip the bag on your mower and let clippings decompose (free nutrients). Water deeply two to three times weekly instead of daily. Pull weeds by hand before they spread. A custom plan like Sunday's delivers only what your soil actually needs, so you're not overspending on unnecessary products.

Look for a plan customized to your lawn size, local climate, and soil conditions. Sunday uses satellite imagery and soil testing to build plans specific to Rockwall yards. You'll also want access to expert advice when questions pop up, plus products safe for kids and pets.

How to grow grass in Rockwall, Texas

Recommended grass species bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, St. Augustinegrass
Best establishment method seeding, sodding, or plugging
Spring seeding window April 20 to June 1

Rockwall's warm, humid climate and alkaline clay soil give warm-season grasses like bermuda, zoysia, and St. Augustine a solid home base. The challenge? Managing moisture and fungus pressure during sticky summers without overwatering.

Why your spring planting window matters here

Late April through early June is prime time for seeding or sodding in Rockwall. Prep that clay soil with aeration before planting (it compacts like nobody's business). One common misstep: watering too frequently in humid stretches, which invites fungal problems. Water deeply but less often.
