Lawn care for Sacramento, California
| Average lawn size | 1,750 sq ft (based on 300+ local soil tests) |
| Dominant grass type | Cool-season grasses like tall fescue, ryegrass, and bluegrass |
| Typical soil pH | 6.7 (slightly acidic) |
| Organic matter | 5.42% |
| Soil composition | 36% sand, 48% silt, 16% clay (loam) |
| Key nutrients | Potassium 167 ppm, phosphorus 68 ppm, calcium 2,077 ppm |
Sacramento lawns have a lot going for them. The loamy soil drains well and holds nutrients, and that slightly acidic pH keeps most cool-season grasses happy. The challenge? Hot, dry summers that stress even the toughest fescue.
Sacramento lawn care starts with smart watering
Your soil's balanced texture means water moves through without pooling, but it also dries out fast in summer heat. Water deeply and less often to encourage roots to dig down. One common mistake: fertilizing during peak heat, which can burn grass already under stress. Time your feeding for spring and fall instead. For more seasonal tips, check out our lawn guides.

Huge Improvement to my Lawn!
Been using the smart lawn plan for Sunday for a couple years now and my lawn has seen MASSIVE improvements. I've tried various fertilizers in the past but this is by far the easiest and most effective. I love that each of the fertilizers is sent to me for each of the seasons and keep me from trying to remember which fertilizer needs to go on when. They make it so easy by providing simple but detailed instructions. The bonus tips are great as well and help me improve my watering and cutting strategies. Would recommend this plan to anyone.

Sacramento, California FAQs
How to grow grass in Sacramento, California
| Recommended grass species | Tall fescue, perennial ryegrass, Kentucky bluegrass, fine fescue |
| Best establishment method | Seeding preferred for cool-season lawns |
| Spring seeding window | March 27 to April 28 |
| Fall seeding window | October 1 to October 22 |
Sacramento's warm, arid climate makes lawn care a balancing act. Hot summers and dry conditions mean timing and water matter more than almost anything else.
Cool-season grass that can handle the heat
Tall fescue and perennial ryegrass thrive here when you seed at the right moment. Fall (early October) gives roots time to establish before summer stress hits. Spring works too, but you're racing the heat. Prep soil well, water deeply but less often, and skip the temptation to overseed in July (your grass will thank you).
