    Lawn care for Savannah, Georgia

Typical lawn size in Savannah 4,296 sq. ft.
Dominant grass types in Savannah Warm season grasses like bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, and centipedegrass
Typical soil pH for Savannah lawns 5.9 which is slightly acidic
Typical organic matter in Savannah lawns 3.33%
Savannah lawn soil composition 90% sand, 7% silt, 4% clay
Key soil nutrients in Savannah lawns Phosphorus: 104 ppm, Potassium: 59 ppm, Calcium: 969.5 ppm, Iron: 192 ppm

Lawn care in Savannah, Georgia presents both opportunities and challenges. The sandy soil composition (90% sand) means water drains quickly, which affects how you water and feed your lawn. While this soil drains well, it also means nutrients can wash away faster, making regular fertilizing key to maintaining a healthy lawn.

The slightly acidic soil pH of 5.9 works well for warm-season grasses common in Savannah lawns, like bermudagrass and zoysiagrass. However, the soil's low organic matter (3.33%) suggests adding compost could help improve soil health. A soil test can help track your lawn's specific needs.

    Tips for Savannah lawn care:

    • Water deeply but less frequently to encourage deep root growth
    • Add organic matter to improve soil structure and nutrient retention
    • Follow a custom lawn plan that accounts for your soil type
    • Choose fertilizers that replace nutrients that easily wash away in sandy soil
    • Mow at proper height for your specific grass type to maintain lawn health

      Savannah, Georgia FAQs

The average cost of professional lawn maintenance in Savannah ranges from $125-200 per visit. Sunday's custom lawn care plans start at $55 for a full season of lawn fertilizer, soil testing, and expert support. Additional options for weed control, seeding, and pest control are available based on your lawn's needs.

The 1/3 rule states you should never cut more than one-third of the grass blade length in a single mowing. This helps maintain grass health by preventing shock and stress. For example, if your grass is 3 inches tall, don't cut off more than 1 inch.

Look for lawn services that are licensed, insured, and have good reviews. Ask neighbors for recommendations and get quotes from 2-3 companies. Key questions to ask: service frequency, what's included (mowing, edging, blowing), and their approach to dealing with common warm-season grass issues in Savannah's climate.

The average cost for professional lawn treatment in Savannah is $125-200 per treatment. Sunday's custom lawn plans start at $55 per season and include fertilizer, soil testing, and expert support. You can add weed control, seeding, and pest control based on your needs.

When choosing lawn care in Savannah, prioritize services that understand warm-season grasses like Bermuda, Zoysia, and St. Augustine. Look for expertise in managing common issues like chinch bugs, brown patch fungus, and summer weeds. The service should provide customized fertilization schedules aligned with Savannah's long growing season.

In Savannah's warm climate, mow every 5-7 days during peak growing season (March-October) and every 10-14 days during slower growth periods (November-February). Keep warm-season grasses like Bermuda at 1-2 inches and St. Augustine/Zoysia at 2-3 inches tall.

Here are key lawn care practices for Savannah's warm climate:

      1. Water deeply but infrequently (1-1.5 inches per week) in early morning to prevent fungal issues
      2. Maintain proper mowing heights:
      • Bermuda: 1-2 inches
      • St. Augustine: 2.5-4 inches
      • Zoysia: 1-2 inches
      1. Fertilize during active growth (March-September)
      2. Control weeds before they establish in spring and fall
      3. Aerate compacted soil in spring or early summer
      4. Monitor for common pests like chinch bugs and grubs, especially in summer
      5. Reduce irrigation and fertilizer in winter dormancy period (November-February)

These practices align with Sunday's approach of working with nature while minimizing environmental impact.

For a healthy lawn in Savannah, GA:

      1. Test soil pH and nutrient levels to determine fertilizer needs
      2. Water early morning, 1-1.5 inches per week
      3. Control weeds through regular mowing and spot treatment
      4. Address pest issues quickly with targeted treatments
      5. Adjust care seasonally - more intensive in growing season (March-October), reduced in winter

These practices support resilient turf growth while minimizing environmental impact.
