Between the salt breeze off Matanzas Bay and afternoon humidity thick enough to swim through, your grass has opinions about how it wants to be treated. St Augustine sits in Florida's warm humid zone where fungus thrives almost as easily as turf does.

Sandy soil (92% sand, if we're being specific) drains faster than you'd expect. Sunday builds lawn plans around these local quirks so your yard actually works with the climate, not against it.

Key nutrients Potassium 35 ppm, phosphorus 70 ppm, calcium 1,316 ppm

St. Augustine lawns grow in sandy soil that drains fast (almost too fast). The warm, humid climate loves St. Augustinegrass, but so does fungus. Your biggest challenge? Keeping moisture balanced without inviting trouble.

Sandy soil changes everything about lawn care

That 92% sand means water rushes through like it's late for something. Water deeply but less often to encourage roots to dig down. Skip the midday sprinkler sessions (hello, fungus). One common mistake: fertilizing too heavily, thinking sandy soil needs more. It doesn't hold nutrients long, so lighter, more frequent feeding works better. It's A Beautiful Thing

We dropped a well known Florida based lawn and pest control service. We began using Sunday products and couldn't be more pleased with the results. The lawn, it's St. Augustine grass, has never looked better. Very thick and plush green carpet like lawn. Pests are no longer an issue ie bugs, spiders, roaches are all gone. Grubs eliminated in the yard help promote a healthy lawn and fixed the mole problem. Finally, all of this for half of the price I was paying the "experts".

    Greener than it was before

Works great to green up my lawn, but doesn't help to fight weeds much. St. Augustine grass weeds apparently are stronger than St Augustine grass.

      St Augustine, Florida FAQs

Professional lawn care services can run up to $1,500 per year. Sunday offers a smarter alternative with custom plans starting at $55 for your first box. Each plan includes a free soil analysis, personalized nutrient schedule, and expert support.

St. Augustine grass thrives with high-nitrogen fertilizer during active growth, deep weekly watering (about 1 inch), and mowing between 1 to 3 inches tall. Watch for chinch bugs along lawn edges and keep soil healthy to naturally resist disease and pests.

Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade in a single mow. Cutting too much stresses St. Augustine grass, weakening roots and inviting weeds. Mow high and often during the growing season to keep your lawn thick and resilient.

Fertilize St. Augustine grass when it turns fully green in spring and continues actively growing. In St. Augustine, FL, the warm climate means you can often fertilize year-round since the grass rarely goes dormant. Avoid fertilizing during cooler dormant periods.

St. Augustine grass needs a fertilizer high in nitrogen. Sunday's custom plans include nutrients tailored to your soil and climate, plus seaweed, humic acid, and micronutrients that support long-term root health. Apply when grass is actively growing for best results.

St. Augustine grass is vulnerable to chinch bugs, grub worms, and fungal diseases like gray leaf spot. It's also sensitive to certain herbicides, so weed control requires caution. Filling bare spots with plugs (not seed) is necessary since it doesn't grow well from seed.

How to grow grass in St Augustine, Florida

Recommended grass species st. augustinegrass, bermudagrass, zoysiagrass, centipedegrass
Best establishment method seeding, sodding, or plugging
Spring seeding window March 28 to May 9
Fall seeding window October 1 to November 10

Growing grass in St Augustine, FL

St Augustine's warm humid climate and sandy soil make it friendly territory for warm-season grasses. The challenge? Humidity invites fungus, and sandy soil drains fast. Time your planting right and you're golden.

Sandy soil drains quick, so water smarter

Spring planting works best from late March through early May, when soil temps climb and roots can dig in. For St. Augustine grass (the local favorite), sodding or plugging beats seeding since true seed is hard to find. One common mistake: overwatering sandy soil, which just washes nutrients away. Water deeply but less often.
