1: Follow the foliage
Autumn is a great time to embrace new colors around your lawn. If you have trees in your yard, you’re likely already seeing beautiful colors. But even if you don’t, it’s a great season for taking a walk and taking in the changing scenery. It is also a great time for planting trees, so consider planting a tree this fall. Let the season lead the way, embrace the autumn colors by letting your trees become your exterior decorator.
2: Create a mini-harvest festival
Whether you’re lacking in natural accoutrements or you just want to bring a little extra seasonal cheer to your yard, setting up your own mini-harvest festival is an easy and fun way to get the whole family involved. Apple bobbing, a few hay bails, a handful of corn stalks, and a pumpkin toss are all easy and inexpensive ways to create a mini-harvest festival that the whole neighborhood can enjoy.
3: Pick-up some fall decor
Autumn is a great time to explore fall décor, but don’t just settle for the decorations at your local store. Check out the ones that grow right in your own backyard. Take the kids on an acorn hunt. Pick-up some pine cones. Find some rocks to paint. Pine cones make great additions to fall-inspired centerpieces, kids art projects, and they are also perfect for creating bird feeders that can support fall bird migration. Nature provides the greatest fall decorations, so get outside and take advantage of what your yard has to offer.
4: Rake in the fun
One of our favorite parts of autumn is that fun is literally falling from the trees. As much as we love jumping in leaf piles, there are actually many ways that you can put leaves to work for you this season. Create a leaf canopy or leaf garland by simply stringing together some of the brightest and boldest fresh leaves in your yard. And if you have any dried-out leaf leftovers, put them to work for your grass byleafcycling-which will help return much needed nutrients to your soil.
5: Become a skywatcher
As the late summer heat turns into crisp, cool fall evenings, it’s a perfect time to get outside and see the full wonder of the night sky. Did you know that autumn is ideal for stargazing? It’s true, in the early evening you get the last look at the summer stars, and later into the evening you can actually see the winter stars for the first time. Plus the cool night air and falling temperatures make it a perfect time to grab a hot cider, warm tea, or hot cocoa, while getting a glimpse of our galaxy.
