Just look at them! Above ground, their weeds can scatter on the wind for miles—often ending up right in your backyard, eager to propagate. Below ground, their taproot can reach up to 10 inches long. And if you don’t yank up the whole taproot, any fraction of it left behind will just grow right back. Basically –removing dandelions from your lawn can be a total pain.
Three ways to get rid of dandelions
Feel like you have too many growing in your yard? We think having a few dandelions is okay, but everyone has their own way. Whether you pull them by hand, tackle them with Sunday weed control, or use more intensive spot treatments is your choice.
Good ol' hand-pulling
Roll up your sleeves for some old-fashioned weed pulling.
- Water your lawn before you start pulling up weeds. Wet soil makes removing them way, way easier.
- Pick up a dandelion remover or garden spade.
- Do your best to get the whole root without disturbing too much soil.
- Check the weeded area after a couple of weeks. If you didn’t get the whole root, it will likely grow back.
Spot treatments
Iron-based herbicides
Dandelion Doom is a selective broadleaf weed killer powered by iron. It will deal with the dandelions in your yard without harming your grass or soil! Once weeds are treated, continue to observe the area and retreat as needed.
Best recommendations for application
- Shake well before using.
- Thoroughly spray weeds. Use a coarse nozzle setting to reduce drift.
- For best results, repeat treatment in three to four weeks.
Additional product use support (where applicable)
Dandelion Doom is most effective when coupled with seeding and other types of propagation.
Avoid applying if you’re expecting rain within three hours.
Herbicidal soaps
Weed Warrior is a super fast-acting but non-selective herbicide. This means it will kill your weeds and any other plant it comes in contact with—including grass!—so be careful where you spray. It works by penetrating the waxy cuticle of plants, causing the plant to dehydrate and die. Once weeds are treated, continue to observe the area and retreat as needed (every two–three weeks).
Last resort
If you decide to use something more intense, we recommend spot treating weeds with a post-emergent—an herbicide that is designed to treat weeds after they emerge. It’s a better option than a blanket application of pre-emergence herbicides across your lawn. But use caution when applying to prevent the chemical spray from drifting across your lawn, wafting into open windows, or coming in contact with non-target plants.
Sunday Tip:
We recommend as much as possible to stay away from stronger chemicals like glyphosate to keep your lawn functioning sustainably. If you’re dealing with a particularly weedy lawn, try a proven method to reduce weeds with strategic seeding and mowing.
Keep dandelions from coming back
Once you’ve dealt with the ones in your yard, you’ll want to go on the offense because, well, a good offense is the best defense.
- Keep your lawn and soil well-fed. Well-timed, targeted applications of nitrogen like a custom plan from Sunday will encourage grass growth at optimal times of the year.
- Don’t cut your grass too short. Mow high and cut your grass at the right length for your grass type.
- Overseed cool-season grass, plant warm-season grass, or fill bare patches in your lawn to prevent dandelions from growing back or attract other weed growth.
- Grasscycle to add nutrients back to your soil. Leave your clippings right where they fall to help nourish your lawn with nitrogen.

The buzz about dandelions
Nature always has a reason. Dandelions, in this case, are one of the most important food sources for honey bees in early spring. They promote hive health and give the bees an early-season energy boost. Got a few in your yard? Don’t feel too bad because you’re doing your part to feed the bees. But if you want them gone, that’s totally cool too.
