The grass seed built for dog lawns

Most grass seed was never designed with dogs in mind. Pet Lawn was.

We tested over 160 grass seed varieties for urine resistance, traffic tolerance, and recovery speed. The winner is a blend of two premium turf-type tall fescues and one premium perennial ryegrass. Deep roots that hold up under heavy paw traffic. Dark green color that stays rich through the season. Rapid recovery that makes dog spots a lot less permanent.

It grows in full sun to partial shade and works across a wide range of soils. For northern and transitional region lawns only.

What's in the bag

  • Urine-resistant blend Tested against 160+ varieties for dog spot recovery
  • Deep-rooting fescue Holds up under heavy paw traffic and bounces back fast
  • Dark green color Rich, dense turf that stays consistent through the season
  • 85% germination rate Reliable establishment when seeded at the right time

Already dealing with active urine spots? Treat the soil first with Pet Patch, then seed. Pet Patch handles the damage underneath. Pet Lawn handles the grass on top.

How to use

Best seeding windows are early fall and spring when soil temps are between 50 and 65°F. That's when fescue and ryegrass germinate best.

For spot repair: Loosen soil, spread at 8 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft., rake lightly. Water once or twice daily until germination.

For overseeding: Mow short, spread at 2 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft., water consistently until established.

Limit dog and foot traffic on seeded areas for 3-4 weeks to give seeds a real chance.

What is a urine-resistant seed mixture and how does it help?

A urine-resistant seed mixture is a blend of grass varieties selected for their ability to withstand the nitrogen and salt load from dog urine. Pet Lawn uses two premium tall fescues and a perennial ryegrass chosen from 160+ tested varieties for deep rooting, traffic tolerance, and faster recovery from dog spot damage. The result is grass that's scientifically proven to be dog-resistent. (Not a just marketing claim here.)

Can I use Pet Lawn Grass Seed to overseed my whole lawn or just for spots?

Use it for both. For seeding new lawn areas or heavy repair where grass has died, seed at 8 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft. For overseeding the full lawn to build urine resistance across the whole yard, seed at 2 lbs per 1,000 sq. ft. Many customers with dogs do both at the same time.

When is the best time to plant Pet Lawn Grass Seed?

Early fall is the best window, typically late August through October when soil temps are between 50 and 65°F. Spring works too, though fall establishment gives roots more time to develop before summer heat arrives.

How long should I keep my dog off the lawn after seeding?

At least 3 to 4 weeks for heavy repair or new lawn areas. Germination needs consistent moisture and minimal disturbance. Once the new grass has been mowed at least once, you're good to let them back out.

Is Pet Lawn Grass Seed safe for dogs?

Yep, all Sunday grass seed is safe. Limit traffic during germination for best results, but there are no harmful ingredients to worry about.

How long does it take to germinate?

Tall fescue typically germinates in 7 to 14 days under good conditions. Perennial ryegrass can show in as few as 5 to 7 days. Consistent moisture and soil temps between 50 and 65°F are the two biggest factors.

Excellent Pet Friendly Seed

This pet friendly seed is amazing! My yard was so "jacked-up" with about 35% of it suffering significant sized bare spots where watering had no effect. After applying this seed all over the yard (and putting peat-moss over it with a roller), my yard became a lush green and those bare spots disappear...

This seed is contaminated

This seed came with my lawn care plan. I put it down in Fall of last year, and now I have poa trivialis all over my lawn. Thanks Sunday!!! I'm quitting you.

We’re really sorry to hear this, we know how frustrating it is to see something like that pop up after putting in the work. Poa trivialis usually shows up from existing soil or surrounding areas rather than seed, but we definitely want to help you get ahead of it and recover those areas. If you can, reach out to us at [email protected] and our yard advisors will work with you to get things moving in the right direction again

Disappointed

I used & cared for this grass seed exactly as directed but absolutely nothing grew. I am disappointed, because we have a large dog that runs *hard* around the yard and there were a few spots (her turning points) that we just mud/dirt and I really wanted a nice, strong grass in those spots.

We're sorry to hear that this was your experience with Sunday! There are a few factors that may have affected your seed germination. 1. Applying the correct rate (or amount of seed). By over-application, we're referring to applying outside of our labeled and recommended seed rates. Over-application of seed can result in too much seed in a single area and cause it to not germinate successfully. 2. Watering correctly is critical. The soil needs to be moist, but not saturated, until grass has germinated. If it gets dried out even for a few days, it may not grow from the soil. 3. Germination rates should be about 7-21 days, but can be more if conditions are not quite right.

I used two bags of this stuff on a 600 sq ft area and attained less than desirable results on my backyard. I used a different local seed on my front yard and got way better results. This moisture boost coating is all non-sense. Half the bag is that junk so that means you only get 1. 5 lbs of seed on...

No growth

I signed up for the Sunday yard care plan and added this as I have a pup now who’s killing my yard. I followed the instruction and even added the extra of putting down some fresh topsoil before applying the seed and over a week in I have no germination anywhere. It hasn’t been overly hot and I’v...

Minimal Germination

Tried to patch multiple spots throughout small yard in SoCal, but minimal germination at best. I used a big box store brand to compare and it worked fine. Sunday products are not efficacious.

Not a “verified buyer”

We used 2 bags of this grass seed, thinking the first time we used it maybe it was just a bad batch. Neither batch ever took root/sprouted. We followed the directions to a T and never got green grass not preventative urine spots.

Very Dissatisfied

This product did not work for me at all. I followed the instructions diligently and got no results. It did not grow at all even with careful mulching and watering. This was a waste of time, money, and effort.
