Growing grass in shade with your Custom Lawn Plan

Your Sunday Custom Lawn Plan doesn't change based on shade in your yard.

Sunday builds your plan around climate, lawn size, grass type, local regulations, and your soil test results.

Shade itself isn't the issue.
  • What matters is picking grass that handles low light. Many grass types get thin and patchy in shade, which opens the door for weeds.
  • Shaded areas also compete with nearby trees for water and nutrients, so the grass there is already working harder.
Our guide on how to grow a lawn in the shade covers best practices.

If you're in the northern or transitional U.S., Shade Select is your move.
  • It's a fine fescue blend built specifically for low-light spots.
  • Fine fescue stays soft, tolerates shade well, and won't need as much mowing.

For warm-season lawns, Zoysiagrass or St. Augustine grass are the better picks for shaded areas.
  • Both handle reduced sunlight and still fill in nicely.
