Best practices to apply Sunday lawn fertilizer liquid and granular

Applying Sunday liquid fertilizer well comes down to timing and moisture. Same goes for granular, with a few key differences. Find your fertilizer below and follow the steps that match what you're holding.

Best practices to apply Sunday liquid fertilizers
  • Apply when temps are between 50°F and 85°F. Outside that range, the product just doesn't work as well.
  • Only apply to soil that's already been watered. If your lawn is dry, water it a few hours before you spray. Skip it if rain is coming within the next 24 hours (wet grass and liquid fertilizer don't get along).
  • Early morning is the sweet spot. Evening works if mornings aren't doable.
  • Only spray on grass that's actively growing. If it looks stressed or dormant, wait.
  • It's fine to apply right after mowing. Just don't mow for at least two days after you've applied.
  • Let it dry before anyone (or any dog) heads back out. That can take anywhere from 4 to 24 hours depending on sun and heat.
  • In high heat, water your lawn again the day after applying.
  • Follow the liquid lawn fertilizer instructions closely. (More product does not mean better results.)

Wondering how long it takes to see results after applying? That's a fair question with a real answer.

Best practices to apply Sunday granular fertilizers
  • Apply when temps are between 50°F and 85°F.
  • Your lawn needs to be well-watered before you apply, but not currently wet. Water it a few hours ahead if it's dry. If it rained recently or there's morning dew on the grass, wait until the lawn dries out before spreading.
  • Early morning is ideal. Evening is fine if that's what works.
Only apply to grass that's actively growing and not showing signs of stress or dormancy.
  • After spreading, water your lawn thoroughly to work the granules into the soil. This helps nutrients break down and avoids any risk of burning.
  • Keep kids and pets off the lawn until the granules have been fully watered in, or until you can no longer see them on the grass.
  • In high heat, water again the day after applying.
  • Don't mow for at least two days after applying. Applying right after a mow is totally fine.
  • Follow the granular lawn fertilizer instructions closely. Overapplying won't speed things up.
