Set it and forget it
Fix It: Be sure to do a spring check for leaks and broken heads. Adjust the time and frequency for your summer lawn needs (see below). And adapt your schedule when heavy rainfalls come through.
Winter Pro Tips: Reduce or stop watering completely when grass stops growing or you no longer have to mow. This usually happens when temperatures are consistently falling below 50 degrees. Then, winterize your sprinkler system and make sure all sprinkler parts are functioning properly.
Too frequently
Watering daily makes your lawn vulnerable to fungus, disease, thatch issues, weeds, and other weaknesses.
Fix It: Water a couple of days a week and adjust the timing when there is heavy rainfall or when your lawn is stressed from climatic conditions like heat and drought.
Too little
Short, shallow waterings don’t penetrate the root zone stunting important root growth and development.
Fix It: Water deeply to promote a strong root system and a healthy lawn.
Not enough water can also be an issue for seed germination. Make sure you’re watering correctly based on the type of seeding or planting practice you choose.
Too much
Puddles of water can be a sign you’ve overwatered. When this happens, your root zone doesn’t get enough oxygen and can lead to fungus and other lawn disease.
Fix It: 1 -2 inches of water a week is good for many lawns. Head to The Shed to learn how to set up a DIY water gauge to measure your sprinkler output and determine if you’ve overwatered your lawn.
Too late
Watering after the sun heats up causes water to evaporate. Evening waterings can also be problematic, depending on where you live. Damp grass and cool air can create perfect conditions for disease and fungus.
Fix It: Water before 10am in the morning to avoid water loss and disease.
Watering with Sunday
Grass that is hydrated will take in nutrients better and a dry period after will give them the time they need to get to work. It’s best to water your lawn a day before hosing on Sunday nutrients and to have no rain in the forecast the next day. Looking for even more advice on watering? Check out Watering Tips & Tricks.
