What are fertilizer blackouts?
During fertilizer blackout periods, fertilizer containing nitrogen and/or phosphorus can not be applied to lawns in certain counties or states. However, fertilizers that contain other nutrients but do not contain nitrogen and/or phosphorus can be applied.
Why are fertilizer blackouts in place?
Overuse and incorrect application of fertilizer can be directly tied to some environmental issues. Nutrient runoff of lawn and garden fertilizers containing nitrogen and phosphorus has contributed to algal blooms in aquatic ecosystems. These ecosystems are sensitive and need to be protected. During these blackout periods, it is essential to comply with all local and state regulations and restrict product application to nitrogen- and phosphorus-free products.
States with known blackout periods
Many states with coastal areas or important water passageways tend to have fertilizer blackout dates to protect surrounding aquatic and marine ecosystems. These states include:
- Florida
- New Jersey
- New York
- Maryland
- Vermont
How does Sunday manage fertilizer blackouts?
During blackout periods, Sunday will not ship products that contain nitrogen or phosphorus*. However, it's possible to provide nutrients like iron and potassium to these regions that do not contain nitrogen or phosphorus. Green Out is one of our products that will help maintain a green and lush lawn during these periods—and most importantly, it does not contain nitrogen or phosphorus.
*Phosphorus may be applied when a soil test indicates that it is needed or when a lawn is being established, patched or renovated.
Sunday approach to nutrients
The Sunday lawn program is anchored in the precision of the application process. This means our nutrient products have lower application rates (per application) of nitrogen and phosphorus than traditional fertilizer programs. Plus when used as directed, our nutrients are applied in a manner that reduces the potential for run-off and nutrient leaching. The other added benefits of liquid applications include a more uniform and accurate distribution of nutrients, an easier application process, and less equipment to store.

How else to protect local water bodies
Although we offer more precise applications to encourage healthy grass that's less reliant on nutrients—and poses less risk of fertilizer runoff!—we can all do more to lawn better. A few tips to keep your local water bodies cleaner:
- As with all fertilizer products, Sunday products should not be applied close to rivers, streams, storm drains, or other sensitive water areas.
- Always read labels before applying fertilizer or any other product to your lawn.
- Use fertilizer as directed and apply only as recommended by your Smart Lawn Plan.
- If you do apply granular fertilizer and spill it on the sidewalk or another impervious surface, remember to sweep it back into your grass.
- Dispose of chemicals properly and contact number listed on the label if you ever encounter spilled liquid chemicals.
