Helpful Tips from Lawn Advisors:

What is tall fescue?

Tall fescue is a hardy grass seed variety that forms a dense, green lawn. It’s able to resist drought, tolerate shade, and stand up to high traffic, making it perfect for active outdoor spaces.

When to plant fescue grass seed?

The optimal time to seed this mix is during spring and fall when temperatures consistently range between 55 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. You can also seed this mix in winter months when temperatures hold consistently below 40 degrees F.

How long does fescue grass seed take to grow?

Expect germination between 6-12 days.

How to plant fescue grass seed?

  1. Apply at the correct rate. For overseeding, use 5 lbs. per 2,500 sq. ft., for starting a new lawn from scratch use 8 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. For patching, cover the area lightly with seed and topdress with compost or a light layer of soil if desired.
  2. Start at the lowest setting and apply uniformly. For hand or drop spreader applications, no matter the spreader type, always begin at the lowest setting. Increase the spreader setting if the seed is getting stuck or not easily distributed. Walk at a consistent pace across the lawn to uniformly distribute seed. Check after application for uniformity and reapply in areas where coverage is light.
  3. Water the seed to germination. Keep seed moist, not oversaturated, until grass seed germinates - depending on grass type this can be 1-3 weeks. Avoid letting new or germinating seeds dry out to ensure successful seeding.

Tons of green growth

This seed blend combined with Sunday’s fertilizers worked awesome for our struggling Idaho lawn. I seeded 3 times over the course of about 2 months and we had tons of growth and it’s continuing to fill in bare spots months later.

High expectations, no results

Filled in this hole from a concrete block with fresh topsoil. Generously seeded and carefully raked in, then watered every day for 4 weeks. Nothing going on. Pretty disappointed.

We're sorry to hear that this was your experience with Sunday! There are a few factors that may have affected your seed germination. 1. Applying the correct rate (or amount of seed). By over-application, we're referring to applying outside of our labeled and recommended seed rates. Over-application of seed can result in too much seed in a single area and cause it to not germinate successfully. 2. Watering correctly is critical. The soil needs to be moist, but not saturated, until grass has germinated. If it gets dried out even for a few days, it may not grow from the soil. 3. Germination rates should be about 7-21 days, but can be more if conditions are not quite right.

Added more weeds to my lawn

My front and back yards are not connected. I have cement and space between each. My back yard had a small amount of thistle in one area, for many years, has NEVER spread before. I used to just mow over them and they would grow back slow. I had dandelions from my front yard neighbor. I purchased the ...

We're sorry to hear that your experience was not as expected! If you've recently raked or tilled your area in order to spread new seed, you may have disturbed a seed bank in your lawn, which can lead to new weeds that you haven't experience before. It sounds like the thistle in your lawn was well-established; these mature weeds can require multiple applications of weed control. For best results, apply in direct heat and sunlight, and try removing any seed heads and splitting the stems of mature weeds before applying weed control.

Little to no germination

I applied several bags of this a couple of weeks ago for a Spring seeding and there were many bare spots I was trying to fill in. After weeks of watering and rain, and proper temperatures, I see very little germination in some places, and none in others. Hard to tell how it's worked on the rest of t...
