Send us the dirt
Every custom lawn plan is tailored to your lawn, soil, and climate. The first shipment even includes a free soil test to zero in on any soil deficiencies. Heck yeah, science!
Your free soil test will arrive in your first box. Our easy-to-follow soil test instructions and video help take the guesswork out of what a good soil sample looks like.
How does our soil test work?
- While soil systems don’t generally differ drastically across your yard, we ask you to dig up samples from three different spots to build a full profile and identify any deficiencies.
- You send in the soil sample, wait about two weeks, and then we’ll email you when soil test results are ready to view on your account page.
- Finally, we update your plan if any soil deficiencies exist to keep your lawn on track for the season.
Check your lawn's readiness
Spring greenup check
For Sunday nutrients to be absorbed properly, lawns must be beginning to "green up." What does that mean? At least 60 percent of the lawn is starting to turn green as warmer weather consistently holds. If you’re not there yet, hang tight and learn ways to promote spring greenup in your lawn.
Temperature and time
It’s best to apply nutrients between 50–85 degrees Fahrenheit for the fertilizer to be most effective. Mornings are best. Evenings are second best.
Remove weeds & fill with seed
To help your nutrients do their best work, remove weeds and reseed bare spots before applying Sunday nutrients. Weeding before applying nutrients to your lawn helps to avoid feeding weeds—while seeding after weeding fills in patches of bare soil leftover from weed removal.

Watering
Check your weather forecast before applying. It’s best for grass to be watered a day before applying nutrients and to have a dry day after applying. Grass that is hydrated will absorb nutrients properly and a dry period after will give them time to fully absorb.
Helpful tips:
- Only apply nutrients to soil that has been well-watered leading up to the application, but do not apply when rain is in the forecast for 24 hours.
- During high heat conditions, water your lawn again one day after applying Sunday nutrients.
Mowing
We recommend that you mow first, leave your clippings on top (aka “grasscycling”), then apply Sunday nutrients. This way, you can mow and immediately apply nutrients.
However, if you plan to (or just happen to) apply fertilizer first, wait at least two days after applying nutrients to cut your grass.
Apply your nutrients
Best order to apply Sunday products
The secret to combining your custom lawn plan nutrients with other Sunday products (like weed control, pet products, grass seed, and pest control) is the order of application. Here's what we recommend for best results:
Each time you receive a shipment from Sunday, you'll find a link to your account My Plan page. This is your personalized, online checklist with application dates and instructions to help you apply your nutrients at the best time for your lawn.
Application technique
When you’re ready, apply Sunday nutrients evenly across your lawn to ensure uniform application. As soon as the nutrients are dry or watered in, you can get back out on your grass. Watch our getting started video or review fertilizer product instructions to see how it’s done.
What happens next?
After your first box, additional nutrients will be heading your way. We’ll even notify you when a new shipment is en route. During this time, you can add spot treatment weed control, grass seed & patch kits, and pet spot repair to your lawn plan at any time through your account page.
