How we approach lawn care for pet yards
Our pet lawn products use 90% fewer pesticides than traditional lawn treatments. They're made without glyphosate, imidacloprid, bifenthrin, and trifluralin, four ingredients common in conventional products. We don't use glyphosate in any Sunday product, and we never will.
Instead, we start with the soil. Humic acid, seaweed, iron, and potassium support the biology already working under your grass. These ingredients break down quickly and don't hang around in the environment.
What goes on your lawn doesn't stay on your lawn. Cornell University tested homes and found common lawn herbicides and pesticides inside every single one. It comes in on paws and shoes.

What pet-friendly lawn care means for your yard
If you've got a dog and a lawn, you know the routine. Yellow spots and bare patches by the fence. The nagging question of when it's okay to let the dog back out after a treatment.
Dog urine is the root of most of it. It's loaded with nitrogen and salts. A small dose feeds the grass, which is why you often see a dark green ring. A concentrated dose in one spot overwhelms the roots and kills the center.
Pet-friendly lawn care means two things to us:
- Formulas that repair urine damage from the soil up, using humic acid, seaweed, iron, and potassium instead of powerful herbicides and pesticides.
- Grass that holds up to heavy paw traffic and urine. Our Pet Lawn seed blend came out of testing more than 160 grass varieties for urine and traffic tolerance.

Choosing the right pet products for your yard:
Different problems call for different products. Here's how to match what you're seeing to what you need.
- Pet Patch Pet Spot Repair Treatment (2-Pack): A zero-nitrogen liquid you apply with the hose-end sprayer. Humic acid, seaweed, iron, and a surfactant (a wetting agent that helps water soak in) wash urine salts out of the root zone and condition the soil. Spray each spot for 15 seconds from about 12 inches away, then water it in for 20 seconds. Most grass grows back on its own within 21 days. One pouch covers about 50 large spots, or 5,000 sq ft as a full-lawn preventive. Start here when the grass is yellow or brown but still hanging on.
- Pet Lawn Bare Repair (2-pack): Urine-resistant seed, slow-release nitrogen, and moisture-holding mulch in one shaker. Apply 1 cup per 1 sq ft on bare spots, or 1 lb per 15 sq ft on thin areas. Each 3.75 lb container covers 55 sq ft. New grass shows up in about 14-21 days. Choose this when the grass is completely gone. The single container works well for smaller yards or just a few spots.
- Pet Patch Kit: Pet Patch and Pet Lawn Bare Repair together, plus a replacement sprayer. This is the right call when the same areas need soil repair and reseeding. More than 300 people have reviewed it, and it's our most popular pet fix.
- Pet Lawn Grass Seed (2-Pack): A urine-resistant, high-traffic seed blend for cool-season lawns in northern and transitional climates. It handles partial to full shade and tolerates heat and drought better than standard blends. Once established, it needs moderate to low watering. Overseed at 2 lbs per 1,000 sq ft. One 5 lb bag covers about 2,500 sq ft. Pick this when you want the whole yard to resist damage, not just the spots.
- Pet Protect Bug Spray & Repellent (2-pack): A ready-to-use spray for the dog, not the lawn. Cedarwood and soybean oils kill and repel adult and larval fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes for up to a week. For dogs over 5 lbs and their bedding. Safe for kids and pets when used as directed.

When to use pet lawn products through the year:
Here's when each product does its best work.
- Pet Patch: Anytime you see a spot forming. There's no wrong season. If you catch your dog in the act, hose the spot down right away to dilute the urine, then treat it later. For prevention, apply across the full lawn and water everything in afterward.
- Bare Repair and seeding: Cool-season grass germinates best when daily temperatures sit between 55°F and 75°F. That means early fall first, spring second. Fall seedlings get a full autumn to root before summer heat. Water seeded areas lightly 1 to 2 times a day until new grass reaches 2 inches, then mow once before letting the dog back on it.
- Overseeding: Fall is the window for cool-season lawns. The Pet Lawn Seed & Weed Kit pairs two bags of Pet Lawn seed with spot weed control, so you can thicken the lawn and knock back dandelions in the same trip. Wait 1 week after spot-treating weeds before you seed those areas.
- Flea and tick protection: Start once temperatures stay above 50°F in spring. Reapply Pet Protect on your dog about every 7 days. Treat the yard every 30 days through fall.
Our biggest tip? Don't wait. Treating a spot while the grass is yellow takes 15 seconds. Reseeding a dead patch takes two weeks and daily watering.
Protecting your dog from fleas and ticks
Sprays are the last step, not the first. A few habits cut pest pressure before you open a bottle:
- Cut back shrubs and wooded edges near the areas your dog uses most. Ticks wait in tall grass and brush, 6 inches to 6 feet is their preferred height to find a host.
- Check your dog after every walk or backyard session, especially if your yard borders woods.
- Wash pet bedding weekly and vacuum the spots where your dog sleeps. Fleas lay eggs there, not on the lawn.
- Keep the lawn mowed. Shorter, drier grass gives ticks fewer hiding places.

Pet lawn care FAQs
What's the difference between Pet Patch and Pet Lawn Bare Repair?
Pet Patch is a liquid soil treatment. It uses humic acid, seaweed, and a surfactant to wash urine salts out of the root zone, and it contains no grass seed. Most grass recovers on its own in about 21 days.
Pet Lawn Bare Repair is a 3-in-1 shaker of urine-resistant seed, slow-release nitrogen, and mulch. It physically fills in spots where grass has died. New growth shows in about 14 days.
Use Pet Patch to fix the soil and prevent new spots. Use Bare Repair when the grass is gone. For bare spots that have nothing to do with pets, Bare Repair Sun + Shade Lawn Treatment + Grass Seed is another option.
How do I fix brown and yellow spots from dog urine?
Concentrated nitrogen and salts kill the center of the spot while feeding a green ring around the edge. Here's the fix:
- Condition the soil. Spray each spot with Pet Patch for 15 seconds, then water for 20 seconds. This flushes salts away from the roots.
- Reseed anything that's fully dead. Wait until spots are treated, then shake on Bare Repair at 1 cup per 1 sq ft. Water 1 to 2 times daily.
- Build resistance for next year. Overseed the whole yard with Pet Lawn Grass Seed at 2 lbs per 1,000 sq ft in fall.
Two habits help a lot too. Water the spot immediately after your dog goes if you happen to be outside. Or train your dog to use one designated area, and keep that zone in mulch or gravel. A treat when they get it right speeds things up.
Is there a grass seed that resists dog urine?

It's a cool-season blend for northern and transitional climates, and it works in partial to full shade. Use it to patch spots or overseed. It works for seeding a new lawn too. Does Pet Lawn seed work on warm-season lawns?
Pet Lawn is a cool-season blend, so it's not the right fit for bermudagrass or other warm-season lawns. Pet Patch still is. Treat spots as they appear, and most warm-season grasses will fill back in on their own.
How soon can my dog go back on the grass?
Once liquid products are dry and any seed or mulch has been watered in, the yard is ready. Liquids usually dry in 4 to 24 hours depending on weather. Newly seeded areas need more patience: keep paws off until grass hits 2 inches and you've mowed once. Always check the label for product-specific wait times.
Can I use Pet Patch across my whole lawn?
Yes. One pouch covers about 5,000 sq ft as a preventive application. Spray evenly with the hose-end sprayer, then water the entire lawn. Used on spots only, the same pouch treats about 50 large ones.
Beyond pet products
Pet spots are one piece of a healthy yard. A few more moves keep the whole thing growing:
- Overseed thin areas each fall so weeds have nowhere to land. A thick lawn is your best weed control.
- Feed the soil, not just the grass. Pesticide-free fertilizers with seaweed, molasses, humic acid, and slow-release nitrogen help roots recover faster from paw traffic.
- A few weeds are normal. Pull what you can by hand, and spot-treat the rest with targeted control instead of blanketing the yard.
